Goddess Flidais - OOAK Spirit Doll with Deer Antler Flower Crown

After such a stressful two years dealing with a pandemic, our politics ripping us apart, and the toxicity of social media, I decided to welcome the upcoming winter season immersing back into my sorely missed blogs. And what a perfect time to do so with my most recent creation, the Goddess Flidais,  who is filled to the brim with gentle protective energy.  I wanted to create work who's presence would be a reminder of a strong, yet kind and gracious personality, especially in our current world that can seem so aggressive.  

I was called to create this OOAK Spirit Doll,  to bring forth the gentle energy of the Deer spirit.  Doing so through the Goddess Flidais seemed the perfect fit. 

Flidais is known as the Lady of the Forest, and while protecting its inhabitants,  the deer are especially sacred to her. She is a Healing Goddess who is nurturing and protective while bringing balance and growth.  

Flidais watches over the vulnerable and is often called upon when people need safe harbor. 

In this creation,  Flidais is a cloth and clay Art Doll. Her face and her deer antlers are original sculpts of clay and definitely speak to her gentle loving energy. 

She was designed as a Wall Hanging Spirit Doll, bringing her sweet and loving kindness to those who honor her. 

Our world definitely needs more gentle energy and Flidais is working on just that.

The Light Carrier - A Dragonfly Shapeshifter Spirit Doll

In these Winter months and darker days, we often yearn for the Light. This week I created "The Light Carrier" an OOAK (original one of a kind) Spirit Doll. She is a shapeshifter - being part Wise Woman and part Dragonfly. She powerfully carries the Light with her and is a wonderful ally especially
during the Winter. Not only does she contain the light at all times, she is able to bend it to her needs. She assists in shining a light on the illusions around us, helping us to pull back the veils on hidden truths. Her Light is transforming, aiding in making a negative into a positive.








The "Light Carrier" is an OOAK (original one of a kind) Spirit Doll, designed as one of my Wise Woman Goddess Wands. The Goddess Wands can be utilized in variious ways such as : (1) Using the Ribbon Loop sewn at the back of her head, she can be displayed as Spiritual Wall Art, being a daily reminder of her symbolism. The Knowing - Crone Intuition Spirit Doll

The Knowing is a Crone Intuition Spirit Doll. The Crone can teach us how to access our intuition more effectively, and to believe in it more deeply. 

Clarity is one of her greatest aspects. She teaches about the importance of clearing away the things that no longer serve us. When we do so, we can cut down on all that outside noise that distracts us. Those distractions eat up valuable energy, create illusions within our priorities, and can muddle those more subtle messages that are being sent to us. 

While many people are familiar with Space Clearing our homes and work places, the Crone also believes in Space Clearing the negative energy within our relationships and projects. When we clear the negativity, we are able to maintain a greater inner balance. When we come from a place of peace and inner balance, we pave the way for a clearer intuitive connection. 

Trusting in your Intuition becomes easier and easier over time. As one continues to improve on creating clear connections, and understanding the symbolism and messages that are sent, we are able to release self doubts and Stand in our Power. 

This little Crone Intuition Spirit Doll is an OOAK (original one of a kind) Cloth and Clay creation. It's such a beautiful way to practice Self Love and Self Care. 

This OOAK Art Doll was created as Wall Art, a looped ribbon hanger on the back, allowing her to become an inspirational statement where ever you need a little Goddess love. She measures 22 inches in height and 15 inches across. 

The headpiece is beaded with two rows of Ruby Zoisite along the top edge. (Meaning of Ruby Zoisite - Happiness, Spirit Filled, Energetic, Abundance, Letting go of Sadness or Anger, Healing, Balance of Male and Female energies, and Being open to Divine Love).  Along the center of the headpiece are 4 square Sodalite gemstone beads (Meaning of Sodalite - Soothing, Retaining calm during stressful moments, Confidence, Self Esteem, Self Care, Healthy Communication, and Releasing fears).  Along the bottom edge of the headpiece are 4 clusters of Pink Puffy Rice Pearls (Meaning of Pink Pearls - Success, Good fortune, Integrity, Wisdom gained through experience).  

She wears two layers of skirt. The first layer is of lavender tulle. The second layer is a Ribbon Skirt made from turquoise and rose colored Sari Ribbons and assorted purple fibers ribbons. Each piece of Sari is adorned with a small bell.

Her face is an Original Sculpt of Clay, painted with acrylics, and sealed with a matte finish.

Finding Courage where the eddy meets the sierra - an OOAK Beaded Spirit Doll for Courage

The Inspiration

I wanted to create a Spirit Doll to reflect a particular character trait at a distinct kind of place, hence "finding courage where the eddy meets the sierra". In my thoughts, being able to find "serenity in the strength" leads to the courage to move forward. When I thought of what that would look like visually, it made me think of a magical little space where a cool blue eddy meets the edge of a sierra...where the water meets the mountain.

The Symbolism

In order to bring that forward in the spirit doll I used color, shapes, and gemstones.  First, her face was an Original Sculpt done in a more roundish shape to reflect the circular movement of an eddy. Her complexion, painted with acrylics, was done in earth tones to connect with the mountains, the sierra. Adding the two turquoise gemstone chips to attach the face to the body was a perfect addition.
Her hair, the main symbolism for the eddy, was created by sewing hand dyed fibers in fabulous cool water blues with hints of mermaid green. Her hair is wavy and flowing, almost a bit wild, but contained by pulling back in a loose pony tail - symbolic for the water current.
Her body was sewn in a soft pyramid shape to reflect a mountain, using a batik fabric in a deep payne's grey that has accents of subtle yellow-green and blues. I loved the color scheme to symbolize the edge of the sierra, and then used several types of earthy beads to accent the symbolism.
The Unakite (spirituality stone) focal bead in the center is itself in a pyramid shape that allowed me to add a small round beige jasper bead in its center.....the serenity in the strength....where the eddy meets the sierra. A flowing swirl of beads lead away from the focal bead, a mixture of Prehnite, Green Jasper, and Wood Beads....all beads associated with grounding, the earth, stability, balance, and strength.
Fibers in lavender, turquoise, purple, and blue are tied around her shoulders as a scarf, and run along the bottom edge of her body and once across her chest.

The Completion 

This wee Wisdom Keeper Spirit Doll can be kept close at hand when one needs to bolster Courage on their journey. She can serve as a visual aid in meditation, allowing one to imagine seeing where the crystalline blue waters of the eddy meet the edge of the beautiful sierra ridge line. Paying special attention to the symbolism involved, along with cleansing breath-work, helps one find Serenity in the Strength....and it is here where you can find

OOAK Folk Art Doll in honor of Iris Apfel the Fashion Icon

I wanted to take a moment to share one of my recent OOAK Folk Art Dolls  that had sold almost immediately, and I hadn't had time to blog about her. But she definitely deserves some space on the blog, especially as she is one of my favorites. 

She was created to honor Iris Apfel, the beloved fashion icon.

The Creative Process of making Iris Apfel 

 I had such a great time creating her, choosing a multitude of fabrics that would be unique and reflective of Iris and her style. I'm thinking about creating another of her because that creative process was SO entirely fulfilling. 

Choosing gemstones and beads to create her bold statement jewelry pieces was one of the most detail oriented parts, by trying to imagine what Iris would choose.

OOAK Folk Art Doll Inspired by the Tehuantepec Marketplace

My love for Frida Kahlo recently led me to learn about a magical place in Mexico that was truly an inspiration. One afternoon I had been reading and found that Frida had adopted her colorful traditional dress and style from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. I started to look up information about the region and discovered that this place was not like any other within Mexico. 

Tehuantepec is known for its Marketplace, most especially because it is run and operated by the Women. The Women dominate the local markets and the regional economy. It is said that Juchi Ta'n de Zaragoza is the most impressive - rows and rows of stalls filled with jewelry, folk art, clothing, and local foods. While most of the men work in agriculture, the women are highly experienced vendors at Market. The women are afforded economic independence, which is out of the norm for the rest of the country. Here you find the indigenous Zapotec culture, which is said to be more advanced, in many ways, than Western culture. 

After reading as much as I could find about Tehuantepec, I was inspired to create one of my Wisdom Keepers in honor of the women who run the marketplace.

The Agate Sunset and her Heart Wide Open - OOAK Art Doll Wall Hanging with Symbolic Story

She walks with her Heart Wide Open. It is the only way that her spirit is able to Live....authentically. She finds joy watching and engaging with the precious life all around her, be it plant, animal, or human. There are lessons to be learned from them all, aren't there?. Though honestly, as of late, it has brought sadness to her.
Watching how people have been treating one another, the judging, the tearing down, the turning of backs on one another, and the total disregard out of greed or fear.....all seems to be at such heightened levels. The grief exists whether she is on the receiving end or witnessing it happening to another. At times it feels like her heart couldn't hold one more ounce of sadness.

There have been many who have offered up unsolicited advice for her sadness....turn off the news...don't be an advocate...don't participate in social justice events...don't engage in politics...delete people from social media...delete people from your life...turn your back...turn the other cheek...let someone else help...keep your thoughts to yourself....bury your head in the sand....just worry about your own life...don't talk about the negative...grow a thicker skin...you're just looking at things wrong...Close Your Heart. ...
Sometimes all those things make her snort a half giggle. She thought how funny it is that as children we are raised to be thoughtful, kind, and giving human beings....yet when we are older we are told NOT to be.

She is not going to change who she is. She will continue to walk with her Heart Wide Open...to feel...to love...to cry...to laugh...to help...to give....to be fully Present for herself and others.  She will continue to let her heart lead the way.
And in those moments when things feel a little rocky, when the sadness comes, and when the world seems disappointing, she will protect herself Spiritually.
She will close her eyes and imagine herself standing within the Agate Sunset....where the wide open sky looks like a painter's brush has spread magnificent streaks of magenta and fiery orange, dusty rose and splatters of periwinkle blues. She will hold close those wondrous Agate gemstones, gifts from Mother Earth, as they cleanse away the stress and stimulate her life force, those tool bits of spiritual protection. She will come to this space every night and she will come here as often as need be...to remember who she is...to remember that we are all Perfectly Imperfect...and to continue having the Strength to Walk with her Heart Wide Open. 

{As an aside, how perfect that at the end of writing this little bit about the Agate Sunset, I made myself a cup of Honey Lavender Yogi Tea....and the sweet message on the tea tag said "Your great happiness is based on the warmth of your heart" }

Pearls and Power - a Spirit Doll for Women's Empowerment

Pearls and Power

This beautiful Goddess may at first appear as a delicate feminine flower, but underneath that soft exterior is a powerful warrior. Her journey has taught her many lessons over time, and while some of those lessons were brought with ease and swiftness, others were more difficult mountains to climb. No matter the mode of the lesson though, she kept the beautiful wisdom that she received from them all. 

She carries both the light and the dark - the yin and the yang - the masculine and the feminine. It allows her to embrace the beautiful Goddess essence while also being the strong warrior that is sometimes needed.

Starlina Dragonfly and Keeping your Light from going Dim

Starlina stopped to rest on a dahlia stem. She needed to pause for a moment and put things in to perspective. 

All of this 'busy busy busy", flutter here and flutter there, was catching up with her. She was the same amount of busy, but found that by the end of the day she wasn't finishing what she needed to. 

Well.....that's wasn't entirely true....she wasn't finishing what she needed to 

for Her. 

When she gazed down at her reflection in the stream, she noticed that her "light" wasn't shining as bright as normal. It was markedly more dim, and this would just not do.

It had taken quite some time to become who she was, for her colors to come into their maturity. Her energy had always been a force to be reckoned with, yet now she felt the drain. She had fallen out of balance.

While she had always given freely of her time helping others, she knew that doing so required daily maintenance to achieve a healthy balance. And here she was....feeling dim and exhausted. 

Thank goodness she knew how to rectify this in fairly short order. All it takes is  "loving self"....loving self enough to draw your boundaries...loving self enough to maintain those boundaries...and loving self enough to say "no". 

Deep breath in, Starlina readied herself to fly...this time back toward her heart path.

Sapphire of the Sea - A Mermaid with Heart

She was always told that one person can indeed make a difference, and that belief has fueled her throughout her life. Sensitive to things around her, she has never allowed herself to feel as if there is never any hope. Each day she makes a difference in her world, inspired by the simple belief that she is here for a reason. 

Sapphire, a thirty-something young mermaid, is one of the most beautiful mermaids of the Sea, not only in her outward features but even more so by her big heart. The first word often used to describe her is "kind", which is hugely underrated.

She spends her days quietly performing acts of kindness while sharing her smile and hugs. Over the last few months she has been helping her brothers and sisters in the sea, the turtles and the fish, who keep getting caught up in the fisherman's nets. Each morning, very early, she swims to where the fisherman leave their nets and carefully takes the whole net and swims back to her cove where she then helps release each one of them. Later she hides the net.

The fisherman have been getting frustrated that they keep losing not only their fish bounty but their entire nets each day, and are contemplating moving on to another area (while Sapphire quietly chuckles). The fish and the turtles are ever grateful to Sapphire for her kindness, and they themselves help their sea community to pay it forward.
